We're moving!

We're moving our new stories to Denison.edu, the college's super-sweet mothership. Over time, we'll be moving some of our best past stories from TheDEN over there too. In the meantime, we've made available an archive of all stories here. This archive will be available for a few months before this site is permanently shut down. See you at Denison.edu! - June 2016

How to seek revenge with success

“The Malvolio Project,” a spring production that opens tonight in the Ace Morgan Theatre, tells the story of what happens after an oath of vengeance.

As a sequel to Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” the play follows the character Malvolio, a disgraced man who departs from the island of Illyria and returns later as a war hero and knight with plans of revenge. But, Malvolio, played by Jack Caudle ’17 from Rockville, Md., learns throughout the course of the production that, in the words of the play’s theme song, “success is the best revenge.”

In the two-hour production, Jonathan R. Reynolds Playwright-in-Residence Betty Shamieh marries modern humor with renaissance-inspired dress and plot creating a clever, integrated experience for both Shakespeare enthusiasts and novices.

Shamieh weaves musical numbers, composed by Reynolds Guest Artist and award-winning musician Matt Gould, into the fabric of her play. Some highlights from this first-time production include a cross-dressing “Sasha Fierce,” ukulele solos and duets, a fine appreciation of ale, and whole-cast musical numbers reminiscent of “Pocahontas” and “Mulan.”

“The Malvolio Project” will premiere at 8 p.m. tonight (March 6) through Saturday (March 8), with more shows to follow next week.

“The Malvolio Project” has provided Denison students with a wonderful and challenging experience in theatre-making,” says Cheryl McFarren, director of the production and assistant theatre professor. “We’re looking forward to a whale of a production!”
