Bricks and mortar
During this brief pause between classes and Commencement, we thought we’d check in on Mitchell and Chamberlin, where the facilities team is hard at work, and construction and renovation projects are coming along beautifully.
“Both are still right on schedule to open in the fall,” says Art Chonko, director of facilities services. “We’re excited about the great work that’s happening here.”
At Chamberlin Lodge, there are about 50 workers on site for the renovation that will result in a unique, apartment-style residence hall. The exterior is close to being completed, and inside, the “finish” work is under way, with, for example, the installation of drywall and cabinets.
At the Mitchell Center, they’ve just started to tile the new pool in the Aquatics Center, which is the first of the project’s three phases. (And we hear that by July, it’ll be ready to be filled—with 800,000 gallons of water.) Phase II is the department office suite and locker rooms, and Phase III is the fitness center (which we can’t wait to see), the training suite, and the atrium.
“There are around 100 people working daily on that project right now, and they’ll be there through the rest of the summer,” Chonko says. “Livingston Gym also got a face lift with painting, and the skylights will be replaced this summer.”
Both projects are being constructed to the LEED Gold standards, which are set by the U.S. Green Building Council. Among the firms working on the projects are Lincoln Construction of Columbus and Robertson Construction of Newark.
