We're moving!

We're moving our new stories to Denison.edu, the college's super-sweet mothership. Over time, we'll be moving some of our best past stories from TheDEN over there too. In the meantime, we've made available an archive of all stories here. This archive will be available for a few months before this site is permanently shut down. See you at Denison.edu! - June 2016

A Class Act

This year’s Hall of Fame inductees are recognized on Deeds Field during halftime of the Big Red Weekend football game. Pictured from left are: University President Dale Knobel, Varsity D Association President Rich Seils ’67, Frank Ambrosie ’58, Brendan Herlihy ’98, Kelly Lotts ’99, Bob Martin ’69, Jill Westerfeld ’01, Peggy Tamblyn Glick ’71, Athletic Director Nan Carney-DeBord ’80, and Alumni Relations Director Steve Crawford.

During Big Red Weekend, the college’s Varsity D Association inducted the class of 2011 into its Athletic Hall of Fame. Seven Denison graduates spanning six decades were honored, as was the entire national championship women’s swimming and diving team from 2001, marking its 10th anniversary. This year’s Hall of Fame inductees are Frank Ambrosie ’58, football; Brendan Herlihy ’98, swimming; Derek Johnson ’01, baseball; Kelly Lotts ’99, swimming; Bob Martin ’69, lacrosse; Jill Westerfeld ’01, track and soccer. E. John “Jack” Tamblyn ’39, football, was awarded the Varsity D Association’s prestigious Athletic Citation.

The festivities began Friday evening with the induction reception in the Welsh Hills Room of the Burton D. Morgan Center. A capacity crowd of family, friends and Denison alumni were on hand to support their favorite former Big Red athletes. The program included welcomes from master of ceremonies and former athletic director Ted Barclay, Alumni relations Director Steve Crawford, University President Dale Knobel, and Varsity D Association President Rich Seils ’67. In addition, Denison’s new director of athletics, Nan Carney DeBord, was introduced and gave some inspirational remarks. Former Athletic Director Larry Scheiderer and former Varsity D Association President Rex Elliott ’84 were lauded for their service in support of the college and Big Red athletics.

All seven honorees were recognized and the audience was treated to several thoughtful and moving recollections about their experiences as undergrad athletes in Granville. Ambrosie was introduced by Jim Piper ’78 on behalf of his late father, legendary Denison football coach Keith Piper. Herlihy and Lotts were introduced by swimming coach Gregg Parini, and Martin was presented by men’s lacrosse coach Mike Caravana. Recently retired track coach Pan Fanaritis introduced Westerfeld, and Denison football coach Jack Hatem presented the late Jack Tamblyn’s Athletic Citation to his daughter, Peggy Tamblyn Glick ’71. Johnson was unable to attend. The entire program was streamed live online and is available for viewing on-demand on the Denison Sports Network’s Game Central.

On Saturday afternoon, during halftime of the Denison-Case Western Reserve football game, the inductees ushered out onto Deeds Field to be recognized in front of the large game-day crowd.
