David Bayley ’55 to speak at 170th Commencement

2011 Commencement Speaker David Bayley ’55

Final exams have all been taken, and research papers and creative projects have been completed and submitted. Now, the campus is abuzz with last-minute preparations and activity in anticipation of the college’s 170th Commencement Exercises. The graduation ceremony for 478 seniors who comprise the Class of 2011 will take place at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, at the Mitchell Recreation and Athletics Center.

The Commencement Address will be delivered by author, educator and opinion leader David H. Bayley ’55, a specialist in international criminal justice. Bayley serves as distinguished professor in the School of Criminal Justice at the State University of New York at Albany. His address is titled “The Best Kept Secret.”

Also speaking during the ceremony will be Trustee Wally Burke ’71, offering a welcome on behalf of the Board of Trustees; University President Dale Knobel, delivering the President’s Welcome and the Charge to the Class; William G. Bowen ’55, former President of Princeton University and President Emeritus of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, who will nominate Bayley for an honorary doctorate; graduating senior Ellie Swensson ’11 of Atlanta, Ga., giving her Senior Class Address; Senior Class Co-Governors Brett Ayers ’11 of Mentor, Ohio, and Sibylle Freiermuth ’11 of Zurich, Switzerland, presenting the Senior Class Gift; Faculty Chair Garrett Jacobsen, recognizing retiring faculty members Pan Fanaritis and Marlee Meriwether; and University Provost Brad Bateman, who will present the graduates in the Class of 2011.

Prior to Commencement, Denison will feature two Baccalaureate Celebrations in Swasey Chapel, bracketing a President’s Reception for graduates and their families on Saturday, as well as the traditional Faculty Coffee in Livingston Gymnasium on Sunday morning.
